I'm always looking for things I can do to bring glory to God and that's a good thing, but the problem is the only resource I have is myself unless I invoke the presence of the living God into my life daily. If my only resource is myself then I can never bring glory to God. You see, it's not about what I can do but what my God can do through me. The prophet Isaiah quoted God on the issue.
This is what the Lord says:
“Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
Could you build me a temple as good as that?
Could you build me such a resting place?
My hands have made both heaven and earth;
they and everything in them are mine.[a]
I, the Lord, have spoken!
“I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts,
who tremble at my word.
If our focus is on what we can do for God then we are way out of line. There is nothing more I can add to the kingdom of God. He alone can accomplish His mission on earth. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one struggling with this issue. Until we get our focus on who we are and not what we can accomplish then we will never experience true intimacy with God. King Solomon built the greatest temple that ever existed and he said that it was not big enough to contain God. God is not looking for a house built by human hands but he is looking for a heart that is longing to be filled by his presence. The person who possesses this heart is poor, has a contrite spirit, and trembles at the word of God.
Recently I heard someone say we should operate out of our brokenness and not out of our giftedness. Our gifts may fail us or even change us but brokenness will always place us at the center of God's throne. Wow! That's definitely not worldly wisdom. It's ironic that the Lord led me to this scripture today as I was pondering how I need to proceed in my walk with Christ. He just informed me that He is not concerned about what I can do for Him but that I cultivate a heart that He can reside in everyday. Now that's a real house for God. Are you too busy building a house for God or are you building a heart for God?
